Synopsis

Listen to the synopsis

0:00 / 0:00

In a castle whose floor is littered with dead leaves, a man compulsively plays a tape recorder. Surrounded by figures that haunt him, he listens, rewinds and listens again to the music of Bluebeard.

Created in 1977, Pina Bausch's piece, which enters the Ballet's repertoire this season, transforms Bartók's opera into a wild and intense ritual: that of a man confronting his thirst for power, his desires and his fantasies.

Perrault's original fairy tale is the inspiration for this major Tanztheater piece. Men and women dive headlong into a choreography that exposes the violence and absurdity of human relationships.

The compulsive nature of desire becomes a principle of writing: locked in a series of gestures repeated to the point of exhaustion or explosion, Pina Bausch's tragic characters draw us into a breathless world where seduction and domination converge.

A vast room inside Bluebeard’s castle

Judith has married a Duke named Bluebeard, against her family’s will. Still wearing her wedding dress, she discovers her new house, a cold, dark and damp castle. She gave up everything dear to her out of love for her husband, and yet she can’t help but feel frightened by these walls, which are so humid that they seem to be weeping.

She then realises that the place contains seven closed doors and asks her husband to open them all so light can flow in. Bluebeard tries to talk her out of it but the young woman insists and her curiosity prevails. The only condition is that she can look, but is not allowed to ask any question.

The first door opens to reveal a torture chamber, the second one a storehouse of weapons, the third one a treasure chamber stained with blood, and the fourth one opens on a luxuriant garden with an earth soaked in blood

Bluebeard begs her to stop and not go any further, but Judith is growing anxious and demands to have all the keys. She then discovers a landscape threatened by blood-red clouds and a deep lake filled with tears.

She is now facing the seventh door and, once more, Bluebeard begs her to stop there. The young woman, however, is now convinced that this last door is hiding the tombs of her husband’s former wives. She plies him with many questions: who did he love before her?

Her insistence is such that Bluebeard hands over the last key. In the room are three women dressed in sumptuous clothes. Bluebeard then tells Judith that they are his wives of dawn, midday and dusk, as he spent his dawn with the first one, his midday with the second and his dusk with the third one. Judith, the fairest of them all and the fourth, met him on the night and will be the wife of his darkness.

Bluebeard dresses her in a heavy mantle, a crown and jewels. The young woman disappears through the seventh door, and as the door closes, the Duke is left to his solitude once again.

A cathartic experience - Léonore Baulac rehearses Bluebeard

By Antony Desvaux

On the occasion of the repertory debut of Barbe-Bleue, Léonore Baulac talks about the role of Judith she plays in this ballet by Pina Bausch, created in 1977.

The Étoile dancer plays a woman whose curiosity leads her to confront a man who is both terrible and manipulative. She underlines the harshness and cruelty of a story that echoes our own times.

She explains the central role of the tape recorder and Béla Bartók's music, and describes her work in the studio with her partner Takeru Coste.

Finally, she looks back at Pina Bausch's writing technique, based on repetition to the point of exhaustion, which allows her to transcend herself.

Press

  • Love, domination, sexual violence, desire and jealousy spiral into a deadly vertigo in this conflicting show.

    Le Monde, 2024
  • "It's the role of my life, says Charlotte Ranson. An incredible catharsis."

    Le Monde, 2024
  • The young woman [Koharu Yamamoto] sets an imperious course in this excruciating tale of love and curiosity.

    Le Monde, 2024
  • Léonore Baulac presents it as follows: "It is a work of vampiric power, that vacillates at the border of the beautiful and the abominable."

    Le Monde, 2024
  • Forty-five years after its creation, Pina Bausch's choreography, carried by a new generation of dancers, continues to impact us strongly.

    Les Échos, 2022
  • The quest for love and power, where tenderness and violence merge: Pina Bausch’s art in its purest form.

    Radio France, 2022
  • Relentless, unbearable in terms of both beauty and violence, Pina Bausch's very personal adaptation of Bluebeard is rediscovered more than forty years after its creation and still makes the effect of an emotional earthquake.
